Advice for Home Extensions, Additions and Adaptations

Thanks for checking out my blog! My name's Olivia, and I'll be sharing my advice about construction and contractors here. When my husband and I first decided to move in together, we didn't fall in love with any of the homes on the market so we decided to build our own. We learned a lot about construction and contractors during that time, but our journey wasn't over yet. Over the years, we've had multiple changes made to our custom home, including extensions to accommodate new babies, adaptations for in-laws moving in and even an outbuilding studio for my son's music production endeavours. As you can imagine, I've had to do a lot of research on home building over the years, and now I'd love to pass that advice on to anyone else who needs it. Look around—I'm sure you'll find something useful.

If you are contemplating hiring a skip, you need to keep in mind that it is not simply about having the receptacle delivered onto your property. There are several things you should keep in mind to ensure not only that you are making the best use of the skip bin hire, but also that it is not a safety hazard too. Here's a highlight of some of the important considerations that you need to know about.

Placement of the skip

Typically, homeowners opting for skip hire would have the receptacle placed on their property, However, if you find you do not have adequate space, especially if is a large skip bin, then you may have to place it on the street. There are a number of things that would be crucial to bear in mind if the skip is placed on public property.

First off, you need to ensure that you have secured the appropriate council permits before the skip arrives. Once this is in order, ensure that it remains visible. You need to have some cones placed around the skip to warn other road users. If your skip is staying on the street overnight, it would also be advisable to get some amber flashing lights that would indicate the presence of the skip. Another consideration when placing your skip on the street would be the placement of reflective markers both at the front and the back of the skip for the benefit of all incoming vehicles. Lastly, ensure that the skip is not covering any access points used for utilities such as manholes, grates, drains and more.

Consider the loading of the skip

Another aspect that is often taken for granted when it comes to skip hire is the loading of your unwanted debris. Waste materials should not simply be chucked into the skip bin. Instead, you should have a plan of how to load the skip. The first thing to note is that heavier items should go into the skip first. This helps in stabilising the skip bin while it is in use. Secondly, you should try your best to break off large items before they go into the skip. Failure to do so might lead to a lack of necessary space. This, in turn, may cause you to incur additional costs in the form of multiple skip bins. Thirdly, when filling the skip, do not overload it. Any items that would be protruding from the skip can pose the risk of injury or property damage if they are to fall over. As such, it is best to try to ensure everything fits without spilling out of the skip.
