Advice for Home Extensions, Additions and Adaptations

Thanks for checking out my blog! My name's Olivia, and I'll be sharing my advice about construction and contractors here. When my husband and I first decided to move in together, we didn't fall in love with any of the homes on the market so we decided to build our own. We learned a lot about construction and contractors during that time, but our journey wasn't over yet. Over the years, we've had multiple changes made to our custom home, including extensions to accommodate new babies, adaptations for in-laws moving in and even an outbuilding studio for my son's music production endeavours. As you can imagine, I've had to do a lot of research on home building over the years, and now I'd love to pass that advice on to anyone else who needs it. Look around—I'm sure you'll find something useful.

How to Ensure Impeccable Scratch Repair on Your Wood Laminate Floor

Replacing your worn out floor with wood laminate flooring would not only add aesthetic value to your home, but it also guarantees you years of service. Wood laminate flooring is becoming a mainstay in the commercial and residential building's space. Despite the cost of installation being relatively high, this type of flooring is well worth the investment. However, since the laminate is made from sturdy plastic fixed on the surface of the wood, it could withstand daily wear and tear. Nonetheless, this does not mean that it is scratch proof. Therefore, knowing how to take care of scratches and scraps is critical when you opt for this type of flooring.

Color Consistency

One trick to impeccable scratch repair on wood laminate flooring is getting the color right. Scratches or scrapes usually leave unsightly white strips that are easily noticeable if the floor is a darker shade. In such a case, contact the manufacturer and buy laminate floor repair kits directly from them. However, before you make a purchase, make sure that the package contains filler that matches the color of your floor. Due to the close resemblance of different color shades, it could be difficult choosing the right match for your laminate floor. Your best bet to getting the right color is to take a sample of the wood laminate from any remaining piece that was left during installation.

Clean Edges

While minor scratches are the most common on wood laminate flooring, you should not rule out major scratches. Notably, a significant scratch should be treated differently compared to a minor one. Noticeable scratches tend to have rough edges and are relatively broad, which gives the flooring a rough look. Only feeling major scratches with wax pencil alone is not enough to guarantee you a flush finish. As such, it is essential to even out any rough edges on the main scratches, and this is where you would need a filler knife. First, gently curve out protruding plastic portions of the laminate but be careful not to go too deep. Then using the putty knife, fill the entire curved-out space with the filler until the major scratch is filled. For an even repair, ensure that the putty is left undisturbed as it dries up.

Gentle Sanding

For a major scrape, once the filler is dry, it is more than likely that the surface will not be as smooth as it was before the scratch occurred. Gently sanding the repaired area with fine grit sandpaper will level out the area immediately. Do not worry about the sandpaper damaging the laminate on the floor because it can withstand fine-grit sanding. However, what you should be concerned about is if the area is not as shiny as the rest of the floor. You could take care of this by applying a generous amount of varnish to the spot.
